Mobilize the Earth for Earth Day 2012

The first Earth Day, on April 22, 1970, activated 20 million Americans from all walks of life to speak out against the deterioration of the environment and demand change. As a result, the Environmental Protection Agency was created, the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts were passed, and the modern environmental movement was born.

Today, more than 1 billion people in 192 countries participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world. This year, in the face of global inaction on pressing environmental problems, we must harness that power.

Earth Day Network is calling upon individuals, organizations, businesses and governments to Mobilize the Earth™ and demand that environmental issues become a top priority.

Cats & Easter Lilies

Lilies are a popular Easter flower, but did you know that they can actually be toxic to your cat? Like the Christmas poinsettias, lilies can attract the attention of your cat, and then have a toxic effect when ingested. Keep those Easter lilies far from your pet's reach this season, or look into artificial options. The art of artificial flowers have gotten so advanced that your guests won't be able to tell the difference...and your cat will be safe.

Blackie-Feline of the Month

Blackie came in to board with us on August 11, 2011.  Blackie had lost weight and was down to only 6.7 pounds.  At one point in the past, Blackie had weighed in at a healthy 10.4 pounds.  After discussing the weight loss with her mom, and finding out that she had been noticing increased water consumption and excessive urination, we agreed that some testing would be appropriate.
The senior blood work and urinalysis that was performed indicated that Blackie suffered from a mild case of Feline Diabetes Mellitus. Blackie’s food was immediately changed to a prescription diet designed for diabetic cats. Changing the food was just the first step.

Next, Blackie began to receive insulin injections twice a day.  After receiving insulin injections twice a day for about 5 days, the blood glucose readings dropped from a high of 344 down to 179.

During the next month, Blackie continued to do well and had gained almost an entire pound!  Blackie had also managed to make our hospital her home while she was here, many times roaming around the boarding area saying hello to all the other cats.

Her stay started out due to an unfortunate situation that her mom had with water damage in the home, but ended up being just what Blackie needed, time to rest and get healthy again!  Blackie is now back with mom in their newly re-done house and is weighing in at a healthy 8.3 pounds.

Cats and Plants

The holiday season is a time for celebration, but can also be a time of trouble for your family pet! When preparing for the festivities, it is always important to consider your pets because we often don’t realize that they can get sick from the things we take for granted…like the plants that we bring in for the holiday! For example, mistletoe and artificial snow are poisonous; and poinsettias can cause stomach upset if chewed. Lilies and Holly can be dangerous if consumed. A safe replacement would be silk flowers, which present no harm to your pets.
